United States of America
America's trucking industry is the lifeblood of the U.S. economy. In fact, nearly every good consumed in the U.S. is put on a truck at some point. As a result, the trucking industry hauled 72.5% of all freight transported in the United States in 2019, equating to 11.84 billion tons. Trucking accounts for over 70 percent of freight in the United States. This means trucking generates more revenue than any other industry in the United States.
Canada
In 2018, the industry generated almost 39.55 billion Canadian dollars from almost 63.7 million shipments. Both these figures are slightly lower than at the industry’s peak in 2014, when shipments of 63.8 million tons of cargo generated 38.7 billion in revenue. In 2018, 312,000 truck drivers were employed by the Canadian trucking industry, an increase of 55,000 from 2000. Despite this increase, the prevailing view is that there is a shortage of truck drivers.
